This state title was what you’d call an “empty win”.. i.e. i was second but the winner didn’t qualify for the medal as a pro.. it was Dale Sedgwick. It was typically hot and a long open circuit in the Glenwood/Alexandria are. There was a decent sized field but attrition ruled the day. Dale was on rippin form as he and Poul Holm counter attacked each other while Scott Flanders and myself tried to keep the cramps at bay. Dale’s final move came about 2 miles from the finish and i was the freshest of the rest for the race for 2nd. I was racing for the state win as I knew Dale would be denied the medal by the official. He was bummed but he won the same way in 1993 when Joe Parkin won in Coors Light duds. So his argument was moot.
