1998 saw the MN State Road Race return to Glenwood, MN albeit on a modified course. The biggest change was that the finish was at the top of a long, relatively gradual climb. On the first lap of the race, Kyle Butkewicz (Flanders), Eric Hansen (Loon State), and Jeremy Sartain (GP) attacked and established a healthy gap. Sartain flatted, leaving just 2 off the front. After a couple laps, Hansen came back to the field, leaving Butkewicz off solo. A relatively unknown Gerry Finken (Squadra Corsa) then bridged across solo to Butkewicz. Late in the race, the field comes upon Butkewicz on the side of the road, who was experiencing some strange chest pains, forcing him to stop. Finken was all by himself, for the last lap or two. Flanders (Doig, Mulrooney, Homme, and Scott) and Loon State (Koeneman and Dickey), and others were chasing, and had Gerry in site. They figured they would be able to finish him on the hill to the finish. Finken labored up the final climb, and just barely held off a hard charging Dewey Dickey for the win. Here are the results of the Cat 1/2 finish. The Cat 3’s were mixed in, but scored separately.
- Gerald Finken (Squadra Corsa)
- Duane Dickey (Loon State)
