2001 Men’s State Road Race

Tim Mulrooney

This was the second year on the Plainview course. It was won by Fairbanks the year before so it was already stigmatized as being a ‘climber’s’ race. it wasn’t. I don’t remember a true break forming but a simple thinning of the heard that left a dozen or so in contention going into the last hill. I was feeling huge. I was coming off 4 solid Super week races and knew it was my race. It was confirmed in the last 250 meters when i looked around and saw everyone in their small rings. I was still in the big cookie. (i have a pic)
