Critics have surrounded our gates and they are demanding that we acquiesce or capitulate our strong hold. Our tenuous position has left us here at BTDC shaking in our boots. The all powerful legions of accuracy and good content (led by none other than Smithers) has brought us to the brink of surrender…
Well folks, this little daydream certain local (shall we call them “pundits”?) is about as hard-hitting as a pillow fight. I see two distinct flavors of critic which I will characterize as follows:
- Those who fire off blind, ignorant shots.
- The impotent critic with nothing else to talk about.
I will not spend too much time on number one, specifically when the attacks are so misinformed and misguided. When we report on events verbatim from race fliers, should we expect to not get shot down as the messenger? Apparently not, because that is what happened.
On to number two. Earlier in the week, we asked the question, “Is [Smithers] still relevant?” In an effort to hold his already tenuous readership, he has staged a drama, in three parts. This is not a new tactic for Smithers, something he has done time and again to string along his readers, much like a serial soap opera that just never ends but you just wish it would. This time, he starts out claiming that his blog might go away, with a transparent agenda to get readers to “prop him up”. Next, he dramatically announces a few days later that he will indeed keep his blog going, if only because his readers want him to. And finally, he blatantly tried to stir up controversy with BTDC in his attempt to become more relevant. He’s, like a fighter who has taken too many shots to the head, swinging wildly at thin air in an attempt to come back, only to leave himself more vulnerable for the kill shot. I think our original question is less rhetorical and more literal today.
Smithers recently wondered why BTDC doesn’t get the number of comments he does. Also, why we don’t produce content that is really dramatic like he does. His site is like a bar you hang out at once in a while but you wish you didn’t. The topic of conversation isn’t interesting, the drunks there only listen to their own blather, and you smell bad when you leave. Smithers is a windsock blogger who panders to momentum. He was for dopers before he was against them. He was for the MCF before he was against it. And now, unrelated to our topics, he was for democrats before he was against them.
We will force back the temptation to follow SmithersMPLS.com less savory tactics and stay true to our mission, even if we don’t get as many comments.

By engaging in this back-and-forth, you have fallen into smithers’ more complicated attention ploy by doing his dirty work for him. Why would he need to invent the melodrama when he has you to perpetuate it for him? You have unwittingly fallen into his trap, or is the a mutual attention grab?

Damn you Jim R.
You’re like Khan to my Captain Kirk.

I respect your efforts in putting this site together. I like the new layout and the podcast are a nice change of pace. Are you guys still refining things - yes. Are you going to make mistakes - yes. My only criticism, for what its worth, is that while I believe you guys are trying to create a true newsworthy site of a more serious nature than the average blog there remains a bit too much Super Rookie self promotion. I think Rookie’s an entertaining character but maybe that schtick is better served for other venues.

We don’t need any of this on here.
As if I even care to hear what others think

Forget what people like smithers have to say. I read his blog 2 times in my life and I realized he has nothing but negative energy. Stay away from the black holes.
Bike throw should be a place bike racers dread to be mentioned on, not want to be on it.
