The Throwdown: Synergy Scores Big. Flanders Adds More Firepower.

Welcome to the first in what will hopefully become a semi-regular feature on BTDC. My hope for this feature is that it will be self-sustaining from BTDC readers. The following two pieces are prime examples of what we hope to tell theĀ larger audience of Minnesota cycling fans. These were submitted by our readers and I have simply compiled them for your own perusal.

If you have any tips, or story ideas please send them over to bikethrow@gmail.com with “The Throwdown” in the subject line and remember that all information is kept strictly confidential.

Thanks,

Super Rookie

As mentioned in podcast #21 there is a “new” team that is hoping to make a large impression for the 2008 cycling season. The newly re-branded “Team Synergy,” formerly The Bike Club, is once again based out of Now Sports and has added quite a few secondary sponsors to improve their look and feel for the 2008 year. The team has been around for a few years actively promoting a number of events including the Withrow TT and volunteering in support of the Capital Criterium.

Rumor has is that the team has also scored a new high profile member, Tim Mulrooney. This acquisition is rather important to local racing scene as it brings instant credibility to a team that has long been marginal in the elite ranks. Up until this time the teams most notable elite racer was Ben Popp, who also acted as the team coach. There is also talk of some other high profile local racers that might be signed for 2008. One can only surmise that others will be joining the squad and we will report on that if/when it happens.

On the west side of the river…

Flanders (MBRC) have added some more firepower to their already impressive lineup, featuring former A&F rider, Brandon Gavic. The new rider is a former Minneapolis native that is returning from New York after a number of years. This Category 1 rider is Blake Longacre (formerly of Champion System/Cycles Gladiator) and has been racing at the top amatuer level for the past two years.

Word has it that he is a big time team player that prefers to sacrifice himself for the team and providing leadouts. Both of these characteristics are ideal for the Flanders team which features up and coming sprinter David Zimmermann, winner of the 2007 Campus Criterium, and Chris Doig, member of prominent winning 2007 break-aways at Durand and Ken Woods.

WTF? Jay, how come you can’t use other examples for Club? My feelings are getting hurt. Plus, last year when I race in the combined M35+ 1/2 race at Square Lake I was like on Timmer’s wheel for at least 100yds or so. ;)

BTW, if anyone remembers the guy in the long faux leather trench coat doing twirls over the barrier… that was Blake Longacre. He’s fast.

Rich, i did my bike racing 101 undergrad work with Flanders, then my Masters the fine art of sprinting at the U of F, then stayed on board to earn my PhD in Bike Racing and Endurance Training. I was on the 20 year program. Now i’m a professor of time-trialing and aerodynamic research at the U of Hed. I don’t need to go back to school.
