In brutal conditions Doug Swanson of Grandstay wins the men’s title.
A late winter storm that brought wind, snow, and rain led to some race changes but the favorites came through in the end. Winds were 24mph with 40 mph gusts. Add a wintery mix and you’ve got an epic race for some and a sufferfest for most.
In the Men’s 1/2/e race Swanson, Aric Hareland, Tim Mulrooney, and Brian Koeneman survived an early break and Swanson took the win with a convincing sprint. The field was combined with the category 3s after the morning wave of races was pushed back to the 11:30am start time.
The early pace was a swift 31mph into the first right hand turn before the cross winds ended the racing for a majority of riders. Early casualties included Durand winner Dan Swanson (Grandstay). There was a select group of 10 off the front followed by the “field” and various chase groups that were stretched from the gutter to the yellow line. When it all shook out the four leading riders built up a 4min advantage into the start of the third and final lap.
In the resulting group racing for 5th place, Dan Casper (Grandstay) took it easily with a huge effort that splintered the chase group. Finishing in 8th (?) overall was David Schueller (GopherWheelman) who was the victor in the Category 3 race. This is Dave’s second consecutive race win as he won the field sprint at the Durand Road Race.

Actually Cam took the womens race. They combined the women with the 50+ men and she stayed with their break.
