The Throwdown has just learned from Tone Coughlin, promoter of the Duluth Classic, that MnDot has denied his permit application for the Jay Cooke Road Race. Not one to panic, Tone Coughlin has an alternative road race in place for the races third stage. Located just north of Duluth the Lakewood Road Race is situated on County Roads and will feature one significant climb each lap before a fast decent onto flat roads.
Although, it is a little disappointing that the Jay Cooke stage won’t be included in the stage race, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to some in the racing community. With Memorial Day weekend traditionally being a popular camping and sightseeing weekend, Jay Cooke is annually crowded during the weekend. The Throwdown hopes that the Jay Cooke race will return after hearing about past races on the course, but the Lakewood stage seems just as exciting.

The Duluth Classic has over 90 riders registered and Tone has also announced that the 6 member ISCorp Womens team is traveling from Wisconsin to race in the event. We learned earlier today that the Verve racing team is splitting duties for the racing with some riders opting for the Quad Cities event and some heading north. Hopefully more women will attend the Duluth race to make it one of the best weekends of womens racing around.
The mens side of things seems to be shaping up nicely with more cat1/2s registering and nicely rounded out Category 3 field. It should be mentioned that some teams from Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois are beginning to pop up on the registration list for an event that is almost one month away. If past experiences in Illinois and Wisconsin racing are anything to judge, the races should be getting large representation from those areas.

This race is the first of three races for the Nature Valley Qualification Race Series. This is the only weekend event (Black Dog and State Fair Crit round out the series) so it promises to be a hammer fest. No word yet on if all the big guns will be in from out of town, but one can only hope for Brandon Gavic (Flanders) and Eric Marcotte (Bianchi/Grand Performance) are able to make the trip.

Dan Swanson (Grandstay) has been updating his elaborate Minnesota Bicycle Racing Rankings page. Check it out.
