TNW #5 - 4th Place Must Feel Good

The 5th installment of the Tuesday Night Worlds series was a dry but chilly night of racing.

In the Men’s 4 and 5 races a guy won and guys finished 2nd and 3rd.

In the women’s race, a woman won, probably Linda Sone.  Women also got 2nd and 3rd.

In the men’s 1/2/3 race Doug Swanson won and made the rest of us vomit in our mouths a little.  Jens Brabbitt and Eric Carter were able to get away early with Doug and the field never saw the trio again.  No one seemed to notice because guys kept launching ferocious attacks on the prime laps to battle for 4th - sorry but no soup for you!  Try a Snickers next time.

Riveting journalism for sure.

Tune in tomorrow for an even more riveting podcast with Hayes, Homme, and Frye.  We’ll have reports on the Synergy TT, Frye’s weekly Roadkill Report, the Joe Martin stage race, mountain bike coverage, more in-depth coverage of TNW, TNT, interviews from Collegiate Nationals, previews on the Charity TT, Wheels on Willy, and we’ll look ahead to the Memorial Day weekend of racing in Duluth.  Wow!  Be sure to block out about an hour on your calendar and label it - “Listening Pleasure”.  Hopefully someone with actually bring a microphone this time.

Gee, wish I would have know it was a race before, I would have rode my bike more gooder. The funny thing about it was that most did not know they were sprinting for fourth and thought they were scoring points.

I’m all for givin’ it what you got even if you’re out of it. That’s why I gave it my best in the final sprint.

Guess you’re not a fan of self-depricating humor but I did have fun last week in the rain playing with the big boys, despite being two laps down (like the rest of the field). I came to race last week and that’s what I did. Pack fodder like me has to find satisfaction somewhere. A point is a point.

It did appear some did not realize people were up the road. Some, myself included, did not care, and chose to continue racing. Your editorial cast those of us who chose to continue racing as stupid. Not the case.

A few years back at Opus, a rider in the 1/2/3 race decided the race was too hard, and sat out a couple laps. Then he decided to rejoin for the last couple laps, and contested and won the final sprint. The rest of the racers didn’t appreciate him much. Last week was different circumstances, but I think the same common sense applies.

It’s a training crit. It was evident that some of the usual suspects weren’t there, such as Timmer, Hareland, Zim and the GP boyz. The pack had a lot of Cat 3’s in it last night. I was happy to see the 2 youngsters up there with Doug, good to see some rising youth stars to freshen things up. Next week at Opus there will be Refreshments served by IC3.

    Jimmer,

Stupid no, funny yes. Several were joking afterwards that they went for the sprint not realizing it wasn’t for points. It’s akin to going for a sprint a lap too early - kind of a right of passage at Opus.

So if you get lapped at Opus, intentional or not, that’s when you shouldn’t “race”?

I get the sandbagger situation but I stayed out of the way for the most part last week but if they score points for sprints no matter what, this cat 3 is going to try and have fun with four 1s if he can. Never know, some day I might be in a similar situation (not with those four) and not be two laps down.

Common sense or not, it made a miserable night of racing fun for me. No harm and I don’t think I’m any less appreciated by them. I can’t get much lower than I already was. :)

I got lapped last night, I saw Doug and the other 2 come around, it never entered my mind to hop in with those 3. That’s not kosher. In points racing if you are a lap down you can jump in with the main field, but you can’t work with a breakaway or chase. Theoretically you violated the rules.

From USAC rulebook on points racing:
Riders who lose laps may sprint for points only after
being absorbed by the main group prior to the beginning of
the sprint lap. A rider may be considered to be absorbed
when caught by the lead rider in the main group.

    Skibbofficial,

In a track event on the road, how do you know how many riders are in the “main” pack? If memory serves me, there were probably four in the second group too. Only 13 started and there were guys blown apart all over the course. Theoretically, how could I know though? Guess that was up to the official, I never received any direction from them.

    To complete your rule citation:
    2M4. Losing Laps.
Riders may win points regardless of how many laps they have lost.

Really? I suck and get dropped every race. Does that mean I can sit back and soft pedal trying to get lapped, and then go for points (hahahaha-I’d still get my bum kicked)?

I’ve been trying to find others to work with and get back on, but sounds like that’s poor strategy. No point in working once you’re dropped until the pack catches you again, right? I don’t understand this rule at all-what’s the point?

Where is that written? All I see is:
Points Format: Sprint every 3 laps, points for top 3 in each sprint (5,3,1) Double points
at finish. In the event of a tie the rider with the highest place in the finish wins.

Poofter, it’s in the USAC rulebook for Points
Races under Track Racing. Since we are running the crit series as a points race, we generally follow the points race rules set by the track, although I don’t know why we score 5,3,1 instead of 5-3-2-1. Maybe next year we should do it that way, that way maybe Frye could get a point…

Depends on if the officials interpret the rules as only what the promoter advertises - or if they interpret the rules as ‘track event run on the road’ from the USAC rulebook.

Losing 20 points for going down a lap on the field is standard operating procedure on the track. But let’s be realistic here - at Opus if you go down a lap…. you’re not going to be outsprinting anyone for anything, especially in 1/2/3’s….

People were joking after the race because they went for points that weren’t available and didn’t know it, myself included. We all had a laugh about it.

I’m all for giving it your all whenever you can, heck we paid 16 bucks to be there.

Think what you will about the 13 man race in the rain last week and my behavior. We raced, we suffered, we tried to have fun, I followed the rules (it appears), and we laughed about it. Do I think I’m some stud because I got 3 points after being 2 laps down? No. You obviously missed the tongue in cheek nature of it all. If the four Grandstay riders who were the only other riders to score any points in the race are pissed off about it I’ll gladly donate my 3 to Koeneman! - That’s an inside joke based on another conversation I had that didn’t include you. Dano, Mean Dawg and Doug will appreciate it though.
