Podcast #40 - Like, This One’s … Umm, Not Lame

Frye and Homme fly in the missing man formation as Rookie catches up on some beauty rest and tries to recover from his mountain bike adventure.

We discuss stuff and introduce a new segment called “Let’s Ask Homme”.  We’d love to hear your thoughts on this week’s subject.

Frye is lucky I wasn’t there!

Despite only 6 women showing up, it should be remembered that the promoters originally placed the women 1/2/3 in with the Masters 50+ So, riders may had already made plans for their racing schedule. Women, like men, plan well in advance and I don’t think racing with Scott Flanders and Pramann is a very attractive way to spend $30.

Women deserve two fields at every race. A 1/2/3 and a Women’s 4. As the women’s 4 field grows so will the 1/2/3. It is a very simple solution and if promoters want to earn the elusive “roy” designation they must place a womens 1/2/3 field on the flier prior to the race.

Good podcast with the Jeapordy music.

P.S. If I was on the podcast I would have had Frye fess up and NAME the LATE rider!

P.P.S. The Sean Noonan podcast was fantastic.

Thanks Tim. I’m happy to know that my bike throw effort in the 1/2/3 field for the win wasn’t a joke to you. I appreciate the supportive comments from you and the change by the promoters.

For everyone else: we worked hard out there and we’ll continue to work hard to increase the attendance at all races.

I’m pretty sure that if the women 1/2/3 was still grouped with the 50+, there probably would have been 5 starters instead of 6. Just a hunch.

Tim, If that’s your real name, thanks for overdramatizing the content of our discussion.

Seana, Your efforts in the race weren’t a joke to me, Darrin, or anyone else to my knowledge. Tim probably thinks it’s “lame” though. The only thing I said was that it was “unfortunate” that there were only 6 women in the field. I was more curious than anything else as to what might have accounted for it. Was there another event somewhere that drew riders away?

I don’t buy Tim’s line about planning ahead. Give me a break Rookie, you’re reaching! There was plenty of advance notice re: the change and to my knowledge there wasn’t another alternative locally.

I have been in total agreement with what is being advocated for women’s cycling. I’m just pointing out the facts.

P.S. Get your butt out of bed next time Timmy!

P.P.S. We should note that many (if not all) of those who were vocal about grouping of the women’s 1/2/3 field with the 50+ men were in attendance.

And, yeah, thanks for the mention that Laura and I did put our money in when it was changed in our favor.

The track may be the best place for female racers in the area with their consistently large field and the ability to race multiple times during the evening.

As usual, I agree with Frye and Homme. It was very unfortunate (and somewhat embarrassing from my standpoint) that only 6 women showed up for the 1/2/3 race after we put up a big stink to get our own race. I don’t think there were any conflicting races. Although having a long road race (translates to - away from family for the entire day) the day before didn’t help. The bottom line is that if we don’t have more women show up, why should a promoter give us our own race? It would be one thing if St. Cloud was a fluke, but there have been low numbers for the past few races. The other unfortunate part about a field that size is that it made for a pretty boring race. One thing that could help a little in these situations is to have a separate women’s Cat 4 race then have a Women’s Open race (instead of a 1/2/3 race) - that way at least a few of the Cat 4’s will jump in. What else can we do besides continue to encourage others to race?

Womens Open sounds great! the ladies 4’s was a good one ta watch, and I’m sure they’d love ta try a round with the top ladies. Next year fer the calander I think duling ROY races on the same weekend should not happenl, unless part of some togetherness type stage race thing, and There should not be conflict with MNSCS vs. ROY. It can’t be as difficult as it sounds but then again?

And here I thought “Let’s Ask Homme” would get some comments. I’m glad this issue has drawn some attention and the candid feedback is appreciated.

Huh? Inserting a fresh perspective: Am pretty sure I’m fairly lame right now on a two wheeler, and have heard Mr. Scott F has unfortunate health anomalies. This would mean at least several of the nice ladies available in the W123 field likely could logically trounce our sorry, horrible, aging asses. At least mine. Thank Goodness they separated us. And Thank You promoters for a nice race. Did you know my dad graduated from St. Cloud Tech (which we raced around) in 1936? Cool, and Party On!

Pramann is my favorite 50+ rider. It is because he is amazingly fast, despite what he says on this website!

I’m a bit conflicted on the free lap issue. When I registered that morning they were behind in time already with the start of the juniors races. The registration table then informed me that all of the races were moving back to the original time of 15 minutes later. In fact while I was there they inked out the earlier times on the flier at the registration table and marked 15 minutes later on all of the start times.
As I was warming up I kept looping by the course and noticed that the finishes were finishing earlier than what I thought they would. Having noticed this I wanted to make sure I got some warm up on the course and made sure I was there in plenty of time to get a few warm up laps in.
So I can understand what happened, but on the same hand it is our responsibility as racers to make sure we are aware of what is going on. If it was a lap I probably would not have cared at all, but the officials letting him in after we had done 4 hard laps was an incorrect decision in my opinion. I definitely think it was bad form for him to take the prime.

Thanks for getting things back on track Dan.

Failed to mention that he also did a lot of work to pull back the solo break that was off the front from lap 2. They/he should have given that rider the prime prize.
