State Champions Crowned at the Track - Crosby and Hamilton Take Home Gold

NSC Velodrome - Blaine, MN - July 24, 2008

It Sounded like Thunder in Blaine at Thursday Night Lights but it was just the rumble of the boards and the cheering crowd on a championship night at the veldodrome.

The highlights of the evening were certainly the two main events - the Men’s and Women’s State Scratch Race Championships.  The women were first to contest for the championship and after an early attack by Gwen Steel and Megan Lennon and other efforts to get clear by the Dahlmann sisters, things came back together late in the 40 lap scratch race and things would be decided in a bunch sprint.  Lindsey Hamilton of Grumpy’s /LGR held off a hard charging Elena Dorr at the line and took home top honors.  Dorr was the runner-up with Steel rounding out the podium in third.

The men’s 60 lap Championship was a fast affair with the likes of Dan Casper, Dale Sedgewick, Dan Schueller, and Brian Crosby pushing the pace and trying to find a move that would stick.  With 20 riders in the field, breaks weren’t able to hold and as in the women’s event, the group was together for a bunch sprint to decide the championship.  With a lap and a half to go, Andy Kruse of Speedfix Racing was the first to jump and was followed closely by Brian Crosby of Speedfix, Chris Ferris of sub11 racing, Pete Schweich of Grumpy’s / LGR, Tyler Denniston of Cat 6 Racing, and Andy Frye of Loon State Cyclists.  Crosby was able to come around Kruse to take the victory.  Kruse hung on for second followed by Ferris.

Crosby added to his earlier second place in the Tempo race and capped things off with a win in the Miss and Out, despite an unoffical protest from Kevin “sCRYbaby” Schaeffer, to win the men’s 1/2 omnium.

In his first night as a cat 2 Schweich came up big with a win in the Tempo race, a 5th in the scratch race, and a third place in the Miss and Out to finish second in the omnium.

Frye won the men’s cat 3 omnium with wins in the 10 lap scratch race and the reverse win and out.  Heidi Dahlmann finished on top in the women’s omnium and Chazz Martin a junior rider from the Northbrook Velodrome riding for Smart Cycling dominated the men’s 4/5 field and won the omnium easily.

Chazz Martin is a good kid. Hope he brings up more juniors from Northbrook and Kenosha in the future.

Hats off to Linsey Hamilton who held off Elana Dorr in the final sprint of the State Scratch.

Getting a bit nit-picky—-the early attack was gwen steel and MEGAN LENNON. And it was Hamilton and DORR at the line. Podium was Hamilton, Dorr, Steel.
