The Throwdown: Local Racing Makes Strib! The Park Board Is Mean.

Yes, you have read the headline correctly…local bicycle racing has finally reached the big time! Take a look at this article in the Star Tribune. Scroll down a little ways to find out what is happening at the Velodrome this weekend.

Huge props to the Velodrome community for getting this plug in the Newspaper of the Twin Cities. Bikethrow.com has been outscooped by the big dogs!

The Minneapolis Park Board has turned down permit applications for three city based cyclocross courses including the big favorites at Powderhorn Park and Boom Island. The city has cited complaints from neighbors and park afficianados, the Throwdown wonders if neighbors don’t like people using city owned land.

Read the official statement from the Powderhorn promoter here.

The three races that were denied permits were; Boom Island, Powderhorn Park and a new event promoted by Grumpy’s/LGR at Theodore Wirth. The city will only allow for cyclocross races on the ski trails at Theodore Wirth. The Grumpy’s event had a conflict with the citywide bike tour promoted by the Park Board. A fourth event may or may not be asking for a permit with the city of Minneapolis and it may or may not be promoted by Gene-O.

Both Powderhorn and Boom Island promoters are anticipating a cross event for the coming season. The Grumpy’s/LGR team will continue to host their annual event at the NSC Velodrome on November 8th.

Locals who disagree with the decision to halt the use of city parks for cyclocross events are encouraged to politely contact their park board representatives, and promptly vote them out of office if they don’t reverse their decision by election day.

The Minnesota CX scene will be turned on its head with an upcoming announcement from the Crossniacs and Grumpy’s/LGR. Stay tuned to bikethrow.com for more information.

I just love how every Grumpy’s event is shrouded in such secrecy. My hair is standing on end, my nipples are hard and no that’s not a banana flavored smoothie Powerbar in my pocket. Pure unadulterated excitement and anticipation. I will not leave this site til I see that update!! Thanks btdc!!

P.S. - Wow, Hayes and Homme have shaken the late season “dead legs” and are posting like madmen. Homme had two posts in one week! Super awesome!
