The second weekend of Minnesota Cyclocross Racing will see a divergence of racers at two races across the Midwest. The official MCF race is located in Duluth and will feature a night race on Saturday evening and a new version of the Back 2 School cross race formerly held in Northfield, Minnesota. The other race that will be drawing strongly from the region is the UCI C2 race in Madison, formerly dubbed, The Jonathon Page Planet Bike Cup.
The double-up Duluth race is a co-promotion of Mike Hall (Lake Superior) and Jake Boyce (U/A). This is the first time that there is a cross race weekend in Duluth after a three year stint of promoting a Spirit Mountain race coupled on the same weekend as the old Boom Island race in Minneapolis. The promoters are hoping that the two races back to back will boost attendance over the lightly attended Spirit Mountain race and all signs point to that happening. Quite a few riders seem to be intrigued with the night race idea and the quick turnaround for a Sunday morning race.
Sadly for the promoters, their weekend is opposite one of the bigger races on the National calendar. The new Jonathon Page race offers two days of racing against competition from across the region. Confirmed riders from the Minnesota area for the elite race are Linda Sone (Ridley), David Hackworthy (Ridley), Duane Dickey (Flanders), Spencer Haugh (Grumpy’s/LGR), Adam Bergman (Texas Roadhouse) and U-23 National Champion Bjorn Selander (Ridley). These riders are not alone as a dozen other riders are planning on making the trip to one of the largest cyclocross races in the region.
The elite riders from the area have their work cut out for them as Jonathon Page (Planet Bike) will be looking to win his namesake race. Page will have the help of psuedo-Minnesota racers Marko and Jesse Lalonde (Planety Bike), who both formerly raced for Kenwood Cycles. With the Planet Bike squad rounded out by Tristan Schoeten the team has quite a bit of Wisconsin flavor and will be going head to head with the likes of Todd (GT) and Troy Wells (Clif Bar), and Tim Johnson (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com) for the overall victory.
Bikethrow will be in Madison covering the largest cyclocoss race weekend in the Midwest.
Stay tuned for more details.
