Ham Lake CX - Ham Lake, MN

Dewey Dickey of Flanders powered his way to another victory Saturday at the Ham Lake CX race.  Dickey said before the race, “I don’t know why but I never do well here.”  Did well he did.  On a mostly flat course that featured single track, wooded trails, a fast road section and only one triple barrier section, Dickey was part of an elite group that split from the rest of the field in the A race.  The lead bunch consisted of Dickey, Daoug Swanson of Grandstay, Pat Lemieux and Paul Ellis of SPBRC/GP, Ezra Taylor of Kenwood Racing, Aric Hareland of Synergy, and David Hackworthy of Ridley Factory Team.

The lead group traded shots at each other often with surges by Swanson, Hackworthy, and Lemieux.  Dickey made the decisive move with about 5 laps to go and continued to extend it to an insurmountable lead.  Hackworthy made an effort to bridge but cracked and was replaced in the chase by Lemieux who was able to close a bit but the gap was too great.  Dickey breezed to victory and Lemieux coasted in for second.  Hackworthy was able to hold off a charging Taylor for third.  Swanson rounded out the top five.

The B race was another crowded affair with 73 men and women toeing the line.  It’s turning in to a pretty exciting battle for top honors in the 45+ field between Greg Goblirsh of Ridley Factory and Paul McKinney of Gopher Wheelmen.  The duo were the cream of the crop again and went head to head with Goblirsh redeeming himself with the overall victory in the B race over McKinney who took last week’s battle at Wirth.  Rob Douglas rounded out the podium in the 45+ field.

Jake Helmbrecht of Grumpy’s/LGR was the top Cat 3 rider for his third Cat 3 victory of the season and likely his last except for maybe Sunday in Hudson.  Helbrecht is a shoe-in for and upgrade to Cat 2 and should join the A race ranks next weekend.   Rich Bergman of Gopher Wheelmen continued an impressive season by finishing just behind Helmbrecht with Eric Oftendahl of Silver Cycling coming in third.

The women didn’t have the benefit of an early start in the B race and were forced to battle through heavy traffic before things settled out.  Linda Sone of Ridley Factory notched another victory over Linda Cooper of Great Plains Cycling.

Ben Dubay of Loonfix Racing Cyclists sandbagged his way to victory in the C race.
