2007: GrandStay put three guys into a break that was away ALL day (max of 7-minute advantage) that Bianchi-GP gradually brought back with their entire team on front. Even Marcotte himself pulled through to finally nail it down. Dewey and Jorgos attacked on the last lap, but Dewey flatted, spelling the end of their [albeit tenuous] two-man flyer. The remains of the pack (~15) approached the line slowly and unorganized, with no one really pulling the last couple miles except for Mulrooney. A messy sprint ensued. I went early (~300m), Marcotte and Swanson came flying by (~200m) and went 1-2—it was super close between them—many bike lengths ahead of the rest. Froemming and another Flanders dude timed it nicely to net 3rd and 4th for their clan. I was fifth. Hareland, for whom Tim Mulrooney was apparently working the last couple laps, got mixed up at the start of the sprint with some other guys and broke some spokes, having to just roll it through behind the main action.

A few corrections: thanks for the upgrade, but I was fourth, not third, in 1988. I think Plantikow was third and a guy from my team (kenwood) was second. His name was Dave, but I can’t remember his last name. He won the Iditabike once or twice.

1991: I was third, not Dana.

1993: I was third again, behind Parkin and Sedgwick.

Thanks for putting this together and let me know if you want any info. about the races themselves.

I can’t really remember much about it, maybe Scott,Dana or Dave can remember more. I remember Dana opened the hostilities about a mile to go if I remember. There were a few more in that move, maybe Mark Fries and Dalton. I remember Anderson started but for some reason I don’t think he made the break that day. I didn’t really win the ’sprint’ it was more like attack after attack. It just happened my attack with about 200 meters stuck. So really the sprint started with Dana’s move and then chase, attack, chase, attack, you know what I mean. I also remember the start. I went hard up the first climb on the first lap and everyone was on me like flies on [**** -ed.]. Truth was I felt really bad. I also think Oberpriller and Scott Hebel were off the front for awhile but didn’t make our move.

yea, dewey.. hands down.. it was a mass start event too so I was a cat 4 and i recall about 120 starters. the top seven qualified for nationals. bjorn was never the same.. i think the heat really tweaked him.

that was the same year pete zarembo, the cheif ref and mcf pres (ithink) lectured everryone about littering and said he would start the race until some trash was removed froma yard near the start.. greg lavick went over and found that they were painted rocks submerged in the ground lining the entrance of the driveway. stickman yelled to pete that he needed help picking up the trash. i got hot-foot and dropped out.

The 83 State RR was held west of Buffalo on a course which was considered to be flat. As a result the District Rep (Pete Zarembo) understated the course length resulting in a race of about 125 miles.

The Senior race (1/2/3/4) had nearly 400 riders and started with a neutral roll out to the course. Shortly after crossing the start line Bjorn Carlson, Dan Romig, & Steve Yanzer rolled off the front. Considering heat and distance nobody responded to this move. About 20 miles later Dave Dow started to bridge up, I was the only person to follow. About 50 miles into the race Dan & Steve cracked due to increasing heat. Bjorn continued solo. Since Bjorn & I were on the same team I left Dave to do most of the work. With about 10 miles remaining the remnants of the field caught Dave & Me. Bjorn stayed away for the win. I think Scott Flanders was second with Ed Pepke third. The temp peaked at nearly 100 degrees and about 20 of the roughly 400 starters finished.
